Institute for Minority Health Research (IMHR)

The Office of Minority Health
The Office of Minority Health (OMH) was established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 1985. SAWNET/ South Asian Women's Health
Sawnet is a completely volunteer affair, and the organization has no formal structure, no finances, and no board of directors. South East Asian Health Ethics Network (SEAHEN)

Utopia: Asian AIDS/HIV Information
The number of AIDS cases in southeast Asia rose 40% from 1997-1999. The overwhelming majority of these cases were in Thailand, Myanmar, and India. The actual number of cases could be significantly higher. Malaria, tuberculosis (TB), and AIDS continue to be deadly health challenges in the region, with TB posing the highest death threat.

Association of American Indian Physicians
AAIP is dedicated to improving the health status of American Indian and Alaska Native people, training Indian physicians and other Indian health professionals, and furthering policies which affect Indian health. AAIP also fosters collaboration between western medicine and traditional Indian / Native medicine. AAIP was founded in 1971 by 13 Indian physicians who wanted to provide a forum to discuss Indian health issues and to increase the number of Indian physicians.

The Indian Health Service Home Page
The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The site provides links to IHS internal information as well as to other resources concerned with issues of interest to Native Americans.

Indians into Medicine
Indians into Medicine (INMED) is a comprehensive education program assisting Indian students who are preparing for health careers. Located at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in Grand Forks, INMED support services include academic and personal support for college and professional students, assistance with financial aid application, and summer enrichment sessions at the junior high through professional school levels.

The National Native American AIDS Prevention Center
The NNAAAPC was founded in 1987 as a network of concerned Native people willing to speak publicly on the need for HIV prevention education by and for Native Americans. NNAAAPC's mission is to stop the spread of HIV and related disease among American Indians, Alaska Native, and Native Hawai'ians and to improve the quality of life for member of our communities infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Native American Cancer Initiatives
The purpose of the program is to develop and implement culturally relevant and acceptable cancer prevention and control research projects within local, regional and national Native American communities

Native American Institute at Michigan State University
The mission of the Institute is to: provide training, technical assistance, research, and educational assistance to Native American Tribes and organizations in Michigan; serve Michigan officials and lawmakers by offering periodic information on policy alternatives regarding Indian issues; and promote and enhance the public's knowledge and awareness of Michigan Indian Communities, initiatives, history, and culture. In addition, the Native American Institute has developed program initiatives both independently and in cooperation with Tribal governments. The Native American Institute is the only such Institute in the Great Lakes region.

Native Elder Health Care Resource Center
A national resource center for older American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians, with special emphasis on culturally competent health care. The NEHCRC is located in the Department of Psychiatry. There are four cross-cutting themes to the Center's efforts: ascertaining health status and conditions,improving practice standards, increasing access to care, and mobilizing community resources.

The Native Health History Database
The NHHD is a centralized, nationally accessible, computerized information resource containing complete bibliographic information and abstracts on historical American Indian and Alaska Native Medical/Health research reports.

Nebraska Urban Indian Medical Center
To elevate the health status of Native Americans to the highest level possible, as well as to serve persons of color and others currently underserved in our community. The Medical Center accepts clients, regardless of their ability to pay, with a sliding fee scale.

News From the Indian Country Newspaper
A weekly newspaper that covers national news and events, is currently distributed in all fifty states and in seventeen foreign countries.

The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board
To assist member tribes in their delivery of culturally competent health services and to improve the health status and quality of life.

Pic River First Nation Health Program
A federally funded, community based program, which runs out of the Pic River First Nation Health Centre. The Program focuses mainly on health promotion and pervention strategies.

Science of Alcohol Curriculum for American Indians (SACAI)
This curriculum provides American Indian youth a context for learning about how alcohol affects the body and a community. The hands-on, inquiry based activities found in the curriculum were specifically designed around the interests and skill levels of upper elementary and middle level students.

Seattle Indian Health Board
To assist American Indians and Alaska Natives in the achievement of the highest possible physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being through the provision of culturally appropriate services, and to advocate for the needs of all Indian people, especially the most vulnerable members of our community.

Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)

The American Indian Studies Center(AISC) was founded in 1969. The Centerserves the educational and cultural needs of the American Indian students at UCLA and the Los Angeles American Indian communities. As one of UCLA's 24 Organized Research Units our Center ranks among the top research centers of its kind in the country.

American Lebanese Medical Association
To develop a society through which physicians and other health care professionals who share Lebanese heritage or a humanitarian interest in Lebanon and its people may come together and undertake concrete projects to improve the health and well being of all of Lebanon's diverse religious and cultural communities.

Hungarian Medical Association of America
The primary mission of the HMAA is to promote the science of medicine through participative discussions and lectures among members whose professional traditions are rooted in Hungary. Members share and introduce scholarly and technical advances. The Association also brings Hungarian physicians and scientists into closer contact with friends of the American medical community, and acts as liaison between various American and Hungarian medical societies, foundations, and universities.
